英単語「Free」は、接尾語のfreeは、語幹に当たる語の後ろにつけて、「～がない」、「～を含まない」、「～がない状態」である状態を示します。また、英単語の例にもれず、様々な分野で様々な意味を持った使われ方をしています。「Free」単体は、それだけでも様々の意味がありますが、特に他の単語を合わさってフレーズを作る場合など契約書翻訳に限らず知っておいて損はない意味と使われ方があります。前回は、「Freeの基本的な意味」と「Freeの日常的な使われ方」について見てみました。今回は、「Free」のいくつかの使い方の中から契約書翻訳の視点から契約書や技術書で使用される慣用的表現のひとつ（もちろん日常的にも使われます）の例「free from…」（～がない）ついて見てみます。
「free from…」（～がない）は、いろいろな場面で使われます。例えば、以前「売買契約」を構成する条項の1つである「Sample」（見本）について作成した以下の例文があります。技術文や日常的な文章でも使用されます。
「The Products to be delivered hereunder shall be free from defects and faulty materials and correspond with any sample and conform to any description, instructions, specifications and other conditions agreed between the parties 」（本契約に基づき引き渡される製品は、瑕疵がなく、材料にも欠陥がなく、サンプルと一致し、説明書、指示書、仕様書および両当事者間で合意したその他の条件に準拠する（抄訳））
見て通り、この例文では、「The Products to be delivered hereunder shall be free from defects and faulty materials （……………製品は、瑕疵がなく、材料にも欠陥がなく）」のように使用されます。この例文も製品についてですが、「The Products shall be free from defects in material and workmanship……………」（材料と仕上がりに関していかなる瑕疵もないこと）
そのほかにも、「Payments shall be made by bank transfer to Party B’s account free from any charge」（支払いは、手数料なしに、Bの口座に銀行間振替で行われる）
「This real estate shall be free from defects in title」（本不動産には、所有権に瑕疵がない）。

契約書に限らず「free from….」という意味では、枚挙にいとまがないほど、いろいろな例があり、多く使用されます。ほんの一例ですが、「No one is free from faults」（欠点のない人はない）とか、「He is free from care」（苦労がない）「He is never free from care」（苦労がないはずがない）とにかくいろいろあります。「free from….」（～がない）は、使い方を覚えると、とても便利な用語です。
ところで前回は触れませんでしたが、freeに関連して知っておくと便利な言葉に「freely」があります。freeは「自由な」を意味する形容詞、freelyはその副詞形（「自由に」）です。freeが名詞を修飾するのに対し、freelyは動詞を修飾します。
汎用的な使い方：
Freelyの意味は、自由に、勝手に、遠慮なく、大まかに、大量に等があります。
Freelyは、動詞を修飾するために、「Freely」を駆使して、文字通り「Freely」に使うことが可能です。ただし、会話等を含む日常的な使い方としての成語、熟語等はあまり見当たりません。
そのため、今回は、少し見知った文章を文例としてご紹介してみます。
For this kind of small-scale business, since there is no need to obtain a license, anyone can freely sell their products at the markets. （この種の小規模な取引では、ライセンスを取得する必要はないため、自由に売買することができる。）
By freely using energy conservation technology and solar power technology, the energy payment for house may become zero in future. （省エネ技術や太陽光発電の技術などを駆使して、家庭でのエネルギーに対する支払いは、将来的にゼロになるかもしれません。）

The Buyer may freely dispose of the sales promotion tools purchased from the Seller, unless such disposal is inconsistent with the purpose of this Agreement.（買主は、本契約の目的に反する場合を除き、売主から購入した販売促進ツールを自由に処分することができる）
The Contractor shall be permitted to freely enter and exit the Customer’s premises on the dates and at the times specified in this Agreement, as necessary to fulfill the purposes of this Agreement.（請負業者は、本契約の目的を達成するために必要な範囲において本契約で指定された日時に顧客の施設に出入りすることが許可されるものとします。）
上記の例は、特に「freely」を使わない文で表すこともできます。
