「～に起因する」同じような意味を表すいくつかの言葉には「～から生じる」、「～に原因する（～が原因で～が起こる）」、「～が原因で」などがあります。
日本語から英語に訳す場合、辞書を見てその言葉にぴったり対応する単語を使用することは間違いではありませんが、実際には文脈、本文に内容、それが書かれた目的など勘案して適切な訳語を選択する必要があります。また、英語から日本語への翻訳も同様です。今回は、「～に起因する」という表現をとりあげましたが、このことは英文契約書を含む多くの翻訳作業においても考慮する必要がある事柄です。
これらの言葉に対応する英文は、ざっとあげてみても、例えばto originate from、is caused by、due to、be attributed to、be attributable to、arising out of、arising fromなどがあります。
使い方の確認：
Earthquakes are caused by the “shifting” of rocks underground, specifically when the boundaries of underground plates move.
上記は「岩盤のずれに起因する」でも「岩盤のずれにより起こる」とされますが、意味としてはいずれ同じです。この文章は、例えば、Earthquakes are due to shifts in rocks underground.でも同じような意味になります。そのほかEarthquakes originate from the “shifting” of rocks underground, ……Earthquakes arise from the “shifting” of rocks underground,…/ Earthquakes arise from underground rock movement. …なども同じような、または類似の意味になります。同様に「be attributed to」、「be attributable to」についても、「主語 + be動詞 + attributable to + 原因」でEarthquakes are attributable to the “shifting” of rocks underground.
これらの言葉について英文契約書での使用例を作成した例文で見てみます。
英文契約書での使用例：
The quality control procedures set forth in the Exhibit to this Agreement are intended to improve the quality of the Products and contribute to the reduction of their manufacturing costs. These procedures may specify the liability for the compensation in the event of a claim arising from a defect of delivered product. 「arising from」は「due to」も可ですが、「arising from」のほうがフォーマルであるという意見もあります。実際には、「due to」も多く使われます。
The product assurance under this Agreement shall not apply to any malfunction, failure, or damage to the Product resulting from misuse, modification, alteration, remodeling, or conversion of the Product.
In no event shall the Contractor be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for any damages whatsoever arising out of the use of or inability to use the software.
AAA Enterprise expressly disclaims all liability for any damages or injuries arising from, or in any way related to, activities involving this Product.
The liability of ABC Corporation for any loss or damage arising from or related to the use of such software programs is strictly limited as set forth in the Software License Agreement.
追記（口語的な表現）：
ところで上記の例は、最初の「地震は岩盤のずれにより起こる」を、これを試しに会話文にすると、ほんの一例ですが「As you know, earthquakes usually happen when rocks under the ground move — especially when tectonic plates shift at their boundaries.」会話文としは硬さがのこりますが、とりあえず作ってみました。
ところで「～に起因する（～から生じる、～に原因する（～が原因で～が起こる）、（～が原因で）は、これらの口語的な表現は、sinceやbecauseを使って、「〜だから」と原因を表す表現を「そう言う事だから」、「そう言う理由だから」と表現することができます。
Sinceの方が、Becauseより若干フォーマルな印象ですので、契約書に入れても許容範囲かもしれません。Becauseを使っても原因や理由を説明できますが、ビジネスシーン向きではありません。
Sinceの例：
It’s not surprising that our performance isn’t very good, since other companies aren’t doing well either.
We’ll talk about it another time, since we don’t have enough time right now.
I can’t go out with you, since I have to prepare paperwork before the meeting.
Becauseの例：
I would like to make my presentation persuasive because I want to do well in my job interview.
I asked him to leave early because he looked pale.
It’s worrisome because my grandmother lives alone far away from my house.
